10 Dating Profile Photos That Are Costing You Matches

The worst dating profile photos for men are selfies, random topless shots, photos with a woman, overly posed or very old photos, low-value or boring settings, unbalanced group photos, big groups where you're hard to spot, and photos next to more attractive or taller men.

Cut anything that lowers your value. Your profile is only as strong as its weakest photo.

The 10 photos to remove from your profile

  1. Selfies, especially mirror and gym selfies. Unless it's a really good photo, skip it. A profile full of selfies feels a bit sad, and gym selfies can make you look like a douche.

  2. Random topless photos. The exception is if you're genuinely very fit and the setting makes sense, like rock climbing, a pool or a beach. There are a lot of very fit guys on dating apps, so being in decent shape won't stand out.

  3. Photos with a woman. She might look like your ex, which is a turn-off.

  4. Overly posed shots. Unless you're a genuine model, obvious posing feels fake. Go for poses that still look natural.

  5. Very old photos. If you clearly look different now, don't use them. Three or four years old is fine if you still look the same.

  6. Photos that show low value, such as a low-paid job, or photos with family or parents that make you seem not quite your own man yet.

  7. Boring or inappropriate settings: the bathroom, your car, your bedroom, lying in bed. Outdoor and holiday shots have better light and suggest a more interesting life.

  8. Group photos with only men or only women. Only men feels like a bro photo; only you and women feels approval-seeking.

  9. Big group shots where you're hard to identify. Nobody wants to guess which one is you.

  10. Photos with men who are clearly more attractive or much taller than you. You don't want her to be disappointed when she works out which one is you.

Bonus tip: mix cool with friendly

Looking cool and nonchalant is good, but make sure some photos show you smiling or laughing. Cool and confident in your first photo, friendly and likeable in the next, is a one-two punch that shows you have the best of both worlds.

Why most men's dating photos let them down

The biggest problem is photo quality. Unlike women, most men look worse on their dating profile than in real life, simply because they don't know how to take great photos and make the most of their looks on camera. For what to use instead, see the 6 photos every man needs on his dating profile.

Common questions

Should men use selfies on dating apps?

Ideally not. Unless a selfie is a genuinely great photo, avoid them, especially mirror and gym selfies.

Are topless photos bad on a dating profile?

Usually, yes. Only use one if you are very fit and the setting makes sense, such as a beach, a pool or rock climbing.

Can I use group photos on my dating profile?

Yes, but you need to be easy to spot, and the group should be a mix of men and attractive women rather than just guys, or just you with women.
